Home Buyer Hints: Prioritizing your Home Design Goals

Today we focus on new homeowners.  Your first home can be overwhelming; you’re excited, but where do you start?  Kelly Nelson, Principal of Kelly Nelson Designs popped in with some strategies for prioritizing your design goals.

1.  Paint.  “This is a relatively inexpensive way to make a real difference.”

2.  Consider your furniture for the long haul.  “When buying new pieces, opt for the best quality you can afford.   Whether you intend to or not,  you will end up keeping those pieces for a long time.   Choose items that you will still love in 10 or 20 years.  It doesn’t make sense to spend a third of the amount for something cheaply made that won’t last or that you will hate within a week.  It means several repeat purchase in the future.  Better to buy quality now, and recover  with new fabric or bring in different accent pieces down the road.”

3. Don’t Underestimate the Power of Art. “Art can literally transform a room. One great piece of art can lift the furniture and other elements in the room, making them appear more expensive and important.

4. In terms of deciding what comes first: “Start with your public rooms, but don’t forget to make your private areas beautiful, too.”
